Studying German at Hull University

Single Honours German
You study both German language and cultural modules within this
four-year programme. In each year of study you take two core
language modules, each worth 20 credits, and one year-long culture
module, also worth 20 credits.
At advanced level in German you have three classes per week for
the language modules (1 x written class and 2 x oral classes) plus
one fortnightly grammar plenary lecture. At Beginners &
Improvers level there are five language classes per week. From the
second year onwards the Beginners & Improvers are taught in the
main advanced stream. In German, oral classes are taught by German
native speakers, and written classes by non-native speakers who
have native fluency in German.
Our culture modules are delivered by a combination of lecture
and seminar, typically one to two hours per week. In year 1 you
will gain an overview of the development of modern Germany in
The Making
of Modern Germany.
Our Year 2 culture module concentrates on Representations
of Germany and in the final year the culture module
focuses on Post-1989
Germany in text and film.
In your first year, you will also study a module on
Patterns
of Language and a module dealing with Managing
Language Learning at University. You may also be able to
choose a Modern Languages interdisciplinary module, one of our
pan-European year-long culture modules.
Finally you will choose a Free
Elective module from a catalogue of wide-ranging modules –
anything from a new language to modules in sport or film.
Joint Honours German and….:
Within this programme of study you combine 60 credits in German
and 60 credits in your other subject. Similarly to Single
Honours students you follow two core language modules in German in
each year of study and one culture module or a Free Elective.
German with……:
In the case of “with” combinations, you study 80 credits of
German and 40 credits of the “with” subject, i.e. business,
marketing, management or translation studies. In German you take
the two core language modules and one culture module in German,
plus a Free Elective.
The same pattern is repeated in years 1, 2 and 4, whilst the
third year is spent abroad. As a single honours student or a
student on a “with” combination, you will be expected to spend the
academic year in a German-speaking country, as an English assistant
in schools, a student at one of our German partner
universities or on one of our work placements. Joint students with
another language are required to spend time in both countries,
either one semester in each or the year in one and the vacation on
either side of the year abroad in the other country.
