Helena Gomes is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Hull whose background is in environmental engineering.

She is currently working on the UK Natural Environment Research Council-funded project R3AW: Resource Recovery and Remediation of Alkaline Wastes.

Helena worked for six years in environmental consultancy and GIS project management. She was the program manager for a public company, handling the environmental and radiological monitoring of abandoned uranium mines in Portugal.

As a PhD candidate, she was a visiting researcher at Lehigh University, USA; Technical University of Denmark (DTU), Denmark and Málaga University, Spain.
