About the course
A specialised and unique course with a 12-month placement in Westminster, this is an intellectually demanding programme through which you’ll gain an in-depth understanding of British parliamentary procedures and behaviours. The first two years of the programme are based in Hull, where you’ll study British political history, UK Parliamentary institutions, comparative institutions, political theory, electoral systems and comparative politics. In Year 3, you’ll get unparalleled access to the Houses of Parliament and the internal mechanisms of British democracy, while working alongside an MP or peer. The large pool of MPs engaged with our programme means that we're likely to be able to match you with a politician whose role reflects your area of political interest. You'll also have access to our exclusive seminar series which regularly features presentations by senior Parliamentary officials including Black Rod, the Speaker, the Serjeant-at-Arms, and the Clerk of the House of Commons.
Studying this course at Hull opens doors of opportunity to those considering a career in Parliament. Our graduates are well known throughout the major UK political parties. In fact, we have so many graduates now working in Westminster that they've affectionately become known as 'the Hull Mafia'. And it's because of the quality and prestige of this course that Hull has produced more special advisors (SpAds) than any other university.
