What you'll study

The course is delivered over two academic sessions. The first session runs from September to July and the second session runs from the following September to  May. Attendance is one evening each week plus three block weeks in the first academic session and one evening each week plus one block week in the second.

The final unit is a workplace-based assignment drawing upon knowledge and understanding of material in your three core units. It comprises an analysis of the health and safety management system and undertaking two risk assessments of significant hazards in a chosen workplace.  Coursework is also set by the University during units A, B and C that comprises shorter workplace-based assignments in order to support learning of the material and provide invaluable experience for tackling the Unit D assignment.

This 18 month part-time National Diploma, is ideal for students wishing to reinforce or further a career in the exciting and rapidly developing area of Occupational Health and Safety. The programme provides the knowledge and understanding that underpins competent performance as an occupational health and safety practitioner.

The University is accredited by NEBOSH, the globally leading examination board for health, safety and environmental qualifications to deliver the Diploma.  The National Diploma forms the first two years of the four year BSc(hons) in Safety and Environmental Management and enrolling on the NEBOSH Diploma means you will also be enrolled on the BSc!  Progress through the BSc  is flexible, allowing you to leave at the appropriate point if your wish is to attain the NEBOSH National Diploma.

Alternatively, you can continue your studies and add the BSc qualification to your diploma. The BSc is a four year part-time qualification designed to give you a degree in Safety and Environmental Management. Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate a high level of technical knowledge and understanding in the safety and environmental management field.

Entry requirements

Applicants would normally hold the NEBOSH Health and Safety Diploma or an equivalent qualification leading to membership of IOSH.

Candidates with a level 3 health and safety qualification (e.g. the NEBOSH certificate or equivalent) and a suitable higher education qualification can also be considered. Please include a CV and copies of certificates when applying for a place.

International students

If you require a Tier 4 student visa to study or if your first language is not English you will be required to provide acceptable evidence of your English language proficiency level.
