All University-owned halls of residence and student houses are fitted with a high-speed, wired internet connection known as ResNet.  It will take a few minutes for you to configure your machine to connect to the ResNet network.

To connect your computer to the internet connection, you should follow the setup instructions provided in your housing pack. A copy of these instructions can be downloaded from here (PDF).

IT Support

For most students, setting up internet access is a straightforward process and we hope that this page should answer any questions that you may have.

If you need help, please visit the IT Service Desk on the ground floor of Applied Science with your laptop.

Software and hardware

  •  A network cable (also known as an ethernet or RJ-45 cable) will be provided in your housing pack. Should you need a replacement, you can purchase one from the Library Reception, or any shop selling IT Hardware.
  • You must be running a fully licensed version of Windows XP, Vista, 7, Mac OSX 10.4 or later. If your operating system is not licensed, you will be unable to connect to the internet and the Service Desk will not be able to assist you.
  • Make sure that you are fully up to date with Apple or Windows Updates:
    •  If you are running Windows XP, visit windowsupdate.microsoft.com
    •  If you are running Windows Vista or Windows 7, click Start, and type Windows Update..
    • If you are running Mac OSX, click Apple, Software Update
  • Check that the time zone is set to GMT and the date and time are the correct local time.
  • Ensure that Java is installed and up to date.
    •  Windows users: visit www.java.com/getjava, click “Do I have Java?”.
    •  Mac users: click Apple, Software Update to install Java.
  • You will need an up to date antivirus program installed on your computer.
  • Routers are not permitted for use on the network. Peer to peer traffic and POP3 email is blocked.
  • Games Consoles should be plugged directly into your network socket and then registered using the Games Console Registration Page.

Username and password

  • You will need your campus user ID and password before you proceed.
  •  If you do not have your user ID or password, please visit the Library Reception Desk, or IT Service Desk in Applied Science with your student card.

YOU SHOULD NEVER SHARE YOUR USER ID AND PASSWORD.

Your password is confidential and should not be provided to anyone. Doing so contravenes University regulations and may result in the suspension of your account.

Troubleshooting connection problems

  • If you are not redirected to the setup page or receive a “URL Blocked” message, check your proxy settings:
    • Internet Explorer: click Tools, Internet Options and select the Connections tab. Press the LAN Settings button and ensure that “Automatically Detect Settings” is the only option that you have selected. Close Internet Explorer and then retry.
    • Firefox: click Tools, select Options, press the Advanced button, select the Network tab, press the Settings button and select “Auto-detect proxy settings for this network”. Click OK.
    • Safari (Mac): Click Apple, select System Preferences, Network, Ethernet, Advanced, Proxies and select “Auto Proxy Discovery”.
  • If you are still not re-directed to the setup page, try typing http://150.237.47.203 into the address bar.
  • If you are prompted to enter additional credentials, please enter your user ID, followed by @hull.ac.uk (eg. 303030@hull.ac.uk) in the username box, enter your usual password into the password box and leave the domain field blank.
  • It can take several minutes for computers in student accommodation to connect to the internet after authenticating, during which time you may be redirected back to the setup page. Please close your browser and retry in a few moments. You may notice that your connection will drop and reconnect before you are able to access the internet.
