Departmental publications
Visual identity and writing style
All departmental publications should conform to the University’s visual identity and writing style guidelines.
Marketing and Communications staff are always available to provide
advice but, if assistance is also required, work will have to be
booked in well in advance. Please contact Martin Bull
in the first instance on (01482 46) 6634.
Publications for off-campus use must adhere to all of the
requirements and must be approved by Marketing and Communications
before being printed. In general, such publications are likely to
have been produced by Marketing’s design team and will therefore
follow visual identity guidelines, but most of them will not
receive the attention of Marketing’s publications team to ensure
that content and writing style are also suitable. In these cases it
is the originating department’s responsibility to ensure that
content is appropriate and that writing style guidelines are
followed.
Dates on publications
All University of Hull printed items should carry a date mark
indicating when they were published or the period for which they
are relevant. This is to ensure that readers can tell whether the
material is current.
As most items are produced annually, the date would normally be
the year of publication or the academic year to which the
publication applies. For items that are produced more frequently,
the season or month should be included with the year (e.g. Autumn
2010 or October 2010).
No material should be printed without a prominent publication
date, normally to appear in the black-bar device. If the item
(poster, leaflet or brochure) is promoting an event, the date can
appear as part of the main copy.
Web addresses
Only web aliases should be published in printed material to
direct users to the University’s website. Full/long addresses will
not be printed.
A web alias is the University’s domain address followed by a
forward slash and then the agreed short descriptive word – an
example being 'www.hull.ac.uk/alias'. Aliases can be obtained by
contacting Simon Dewey, Web Manager on
(01482 46) 6811.
On no account should either full ‘http’ or ‘www2.hull.ac.uk’
addresses be published. They are not user-friendly and are likely
to fail if pages are relocated on the server.
Printing
Central Print Services should be the first port of call for
printing departmental publications if they are for on-campus use.
However, if the publication is for off-campus use (or is very big
or a large number of copies is required), please contact
Publications (Martin Bull): we will get quotes from a range of
preferred print suppliers and manage the process for you. If you
use Central Print Services, a Print Requisition will be needed; if
you use an external printer, a Purchase Order will need to be
raised.
