Starting a new business?

So you have a great idea and are at the beginning of the road to starting your own business.  Like most people, you’ve probably got a lot of questions to ask, are unsure where to start or need to talk your ideas through with someone.

First and foremost, you need to ask yourself if you’ve got the skills, personal qualities, time and determination.   If the answers are yes, then you’re already on your way to making a successful business. ........

Researching your idea is vital at the early stages of developing your business.   Understanding your market, your potential competitors, your pricing, and the support you can access through family, friends, business networks, and other experts such as those at the University.

To make your business idea become reality, you’ll also need to consider a number of questions, including:

  • How will you make an income and profit?
  • How will you finance your idea?
  • Who will want to buy your services or product?
  • How much will your customers be willing to pay?
  • What will it cost you to set up the business?
  • What premises do you need / will it be home based?
  • Are there insurances and legal implications?

The University of Hull can offer you help you get your business idea off the ground, through its advice clinics, events and workshops, research and technical expertise.

We can also provide introductions and point you to other Sources of Support .

If you are a current student or recent graduate then there is additional support available to you. Our Student and Graduate Enterprise section explains more.
