Applying for Funds from IAE
Criteria for Granting Funds for Research in Applied
Ethics
The Institute of Applied Ethics has some funds
available for small grants in support of relevant projects. The IAE
will consider applications from members of the University of Hull
who desire funds to promote both research and the dissemination of
research in applied ethics. The IAE will normally make
only one grant of a single type to any individual in a single
academic year, but will consider more than one grant if they are
for different purposes (eg the IAE will only fund attendance at one
conference, but would consider applications for conference
attendance and something else).
Applicants should indicate that they have
endeavoured to obtain other internal or external funding
opportunities (eg from Faculty, British Academy etc), or have only
been able to obtain partial funding from those sources.
Activities and equipment for which funds may
be provided include the following (proposals for other activities
may also be considered):
- Research travel & participation at
conferences (Maximum, £800. Funding will normally be for travel and
conference fees only, not for accommodation/ subsistence)
- Holding of conferences/workshops
- Invitation of guest speakers to
conferences/seminars/workshops
- Books & other research materials
- Computer equipment, software, recording
equipment etc (this may already be available for loan from the
IAE)
Applications to attend conferences will
normally be considered only if the applicant will be giving a
paper. In exceptional circumstances, attendance may be funded
if this is not the case, but only if the applicant proves that
significant research benefit will result.
Applications must be for the purpose of
research or dissemination of research in applied ethics. Ideally,
they should be relevant to one of the IAE’s three principal
research areas. Proposals will be considered as they are
received. The IAE will react most positively to proposals
that fit categories listed below:
- Proposals leading to
publications. Research proposals that will lead to
publications suitable for submission in the REF process will
receive priority.
- Proposals likely to attract or seed
additional external funding. The IAE will view
positively proposals which seed subsequent research and lay the
ground for a subsequent application for external grants, and also
proposals which may be part funded by external bodies (eg the IAE
may be more likely to support an application to fund a conference
if a bid is also made for part funding from the British Academy or
some such institution).
- Proposals establishing links with
other institutions. Applications that help to
establish firm links with other institutions are also
welcomed.
- Proposals raising IAE’s public
profile. Events/research that will help raise the
public profile of the IAE both within the university and more
widely.
A condition of receiving a grant from the IAE
is that the award holder acknowledges sponsorship by the IAE in any
publications that result from IAE-funded research, and sends the
IAE a copy of the publication in question. The award holder will
also be required to send a report to the Director of the IAE after
the project is completed.
