INAUGURAL LECTURE Professor James Connelly presented his Inaugural lecture on ‘A Tragic Sense of Politics’, at the University of Hull , on 18 February 2008.  The lecture was held in the Middleton Hall and was followed by a wine reception in the Artcafe in the Middleton Hall. 

 

BRITISH ACADEMY SPECIALIST WORKSHOP ON PHILOSOPHY AND PUBLIC POLICY

Members of the IAE participated in this important specialist workshop, co-convened by Prof. Susan Mendus FBA ( York ), Prof. David Archard ( Lancaster ) and Dr Suzanne Uniacke ( Hull ).
The workshop addressed critical questions about the appropriate role of philosophy in the formulation and implementation of public policy in areas such as health, law and politics.
Speakers included: Baroness Onora O'Neill PBA; Prof. Henry Shue ( Oxford ); Prof. Allen Buchanan (Duke); Prof. R.A. Duff  FBA ( Stirling ); Prof. James Connelly ( Hull ); and Dr John Tasioulas ( Oxford ).

INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL In August 2007 Professor James Connelly travelled to a location just outside Moscow to take part in a two week summer school on environmental ethics arranged by the State University of Mordovia. This was arranged as part of the developing links between the State University of Moscow, the Russian Academy of Science and the Institute of Applied Ethics at Hull . James was lecturing and discussing the teaching of environmental ethics with university teachers. The summer school was a great success, with a number of international guest speakers and an intellectually lively group of participants. Follow up meetings, workshops and conferences between Hull are currently being planned.
