A four-year programme that includes a year at an American university

Our four-year Single Honours degree in American Studies is designed for students who wish not only to study the history and culture of the United States but to experience life and work in America. Over four years you will enjoy the great variety of modules that we offer, and also benefit from the added study options during your year at an American university.

Throughout your time at Hull you can study the history, literature, politics, film, culture and visual arts of the United States from the 1600s to the present day. Our approach is diverse, interdisciplinary and multicultural. At Hull we are dedicated to providing an exceptional teaching experience, with modules delivered by lecturers with international research profiles.

The degree structure:

Year One: the first year consists of core modules on history, film, literature, and cultural theory, providing  a solid foundation for American Studies courses from Year Two onwards.

Year Two: in the second year you select modules from a diverse range of options and prepare for the American year in a core module.

The American Year: during your year in America you can take whichever courses you like, so long as they correspond with the appropriate level of study

Year Four: in your final year you choose from a number of special subject courses and also undertake a 12,000 word dissertation.
