The Andrew Marvell Centre for Medieval and Early Modern Studies

Hull in 1643

Andrew Marvell StatueThe Andrew Marvell Centre was established in 2008 to facilitate interdisciplinary research and teaching in the Medieval and Early Modern periods. Named after the great lyric poet and champion of religious toleration, who became MP for Hull in 1659, the Centre offers postgraduates the opportunity to cross disciplinary and period boundaries and, also, to specialize in subject and period if they wish. The Andrew Marvell Centre brings together academics from English, History, Music, Drama, History of Art, French and Theology and offers an exciting and innovative taught MA.

The Centre will offer seminar series, public lectures and conferences across the Medieval and Early Modern periods.

The new MA offers a flexible programme allowing students to develop pathways in Medieval, Renaissance or Early Modern literature, history and culture, and to pursue more specific interests in period, discipline and art-form. Students will be introduced to the multi-disciplinary and theoretical debates which have enlivened this area in recent years and encouraged to explore Holy Trinity, Hullthe inter-relatedness of texts across traditional boundaries. Core courses will provide a scholarly foundation in research methods and skills and, in drawing on the expertise of academics from across the constituent departments, enable students to develop imaginative synergies across the disciplines. Optional modules will allow students to develop pathways in Medieval, Renaissance and Early Modern studies. Students will have the opportunity to specialise at three stages: seminar, options and dissertation.
