Hull has a long tradition of expertise in Medieval and Renaissance literature (including Shakespeare), Women's writing, Victorian literature and the literature of other cultures, especially Africa and Australia. More recently, we have established a reputation for the study of creative writing and film.

This varied programme offers you flexible choices, with compulsory core modules only in the first year. There is also the option for students to submit a folder of creative writing or a dissertation in place of a third-year, level 6 module. If you wish, you may take advantage of 'free elective' modules within other subject areas to expand the range of your degree.

Hull University alumni include poets Roger McGough, Douglas Dunn and Sean O'Brien, and our lecturers include poet David Wheatley and Cliff Forshaw. Former lecturers include film director Anthony Minghella and poet laureate Andrew Motion. John Godber's plays (among others) are regularly performed at the Hull Truck Theatre, and Alan Ayckbourn's at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough. The Humber Mouth literary festival is an annual event, and regular recital events take place throughout the year at various venues in the city. As well as the usual multiplexes, Hull has an independent film theatre, Hull Screen, which hosts annual 'shorts' and Spanish film festivals in addition to its regular programme.
