Creative writers in the subject group English have expertise in creative non-fiction, crime fiction, the novel, short fiction including flash fiction, poetry.

The Philip Larkin Centre for Poetry and Creative Writing has hosted many of the world’s finest writers such as Hilary Mantel, Christopher Hampton, Edna O’Brien and Kate Mosse. The Centre’s work includes a Children’s Writing Series (featuring Emma Thompson, David Almond and Malorie Blackman) and Man Booker Prize Initiatives with the writers D. B. C. Pierre and Julian Barnes. Creative writers have also worked in visual and multi-media forms. These have been a regular strand in the Humber Writers’ collaborations. Notable innovations in creative writing include the promotion of children’s writing, creative non-fiction, life-writing and interviews as well as creative engagements with archival materials at the History Centre in Hull, and the social benefits of reading and writing.

Humber Writers

The Humber Writers are a group of writers and visual artists associated with the University of Hull’s English subject group. They are led by core members Mary Aherne and Cliff Forshaw and have produced nine books, three films, a performance work and several art exhibitions in response to commissions for the Humber Mouth and other literature festivals and initiatives. Contributors have included Christopher Reid and Carol Rumens, both former professors of creative writing at Hull, as well as creative writing lecturers John Wedgwood Clarke, Ray French, David Kennedy, Simon Kerr, Kath McKay and David Wheatley. Other contributors include Pat Borthwick, Graham Mort, Maurice Rutherford, Sarah Stutt (PhD student) and the artist and poet Malcolm Watson.

Cliff Forshaw is the only member who has been involved in all the projects; he has contributed poems, paintings, drawings and photographs as well as making the films for Slipway, Under Travelling Skies and Drift and editing the books with Mary Aherne.
