Profile
Simon Kerr is an Irish author, publisher, and lecturer in Creative
Writing. He has taught Creative Writing for twelve years, at Bath
Spa University, Reading University, the University of Leeds, and
for the last five years at the University of Hull where he convenes
the MA in Creative Writing. He writes under a variety of
pseudonyms.
Selected Publications
- His debut novel, The Rainbow Singer (2001) was
published in the UK and the US for a six figure sum. It was
nominated for the IMPAC Dublin Award in 2002.
- His second novel, entitled As Seen on TV (2005) was
published in the UK under the pseudonym, Chris Kerr.
- He was awarded £10,000 by the Arts Council and £1,000 by the
Society of Authors to research and write his third novel,
Blow-ins.

Postgraduate Supervision
Simon co-supervises one PhD student, Jim Younger (High John
the Conqueror, Vintage, 2007). He is interested in supervising
students who aim to write literary, genre or crossover novels.
Administration
Reach Out
Simon has a special interest in encouraging new writing. In 2005
he set up the Huddersfield Literature Festival and directed it for
two years. In 2010 he set up Lightship Publishing Ltd to run the
Lightship International Literary Prizes, which is sponsored by the
University of Hull (iHull). Honorary patrons include Christopher
Reid, Hilary Mantel, Lindsay Clarke and Andrew Motion. For more

External Examining
Simon is currently the External Examiner for
the MA in Creative Writing at Newcastle University. He has been the
External at Lancaster University and Bradford University.
