History Research at Hull

Medieval scribeOur research activity ranges from ancient Egypt to the contemporary Philippines, by way of modern Australia, India, the Middle East, and Britain and Europe from the early middle ages to the twentieth century. Since 2000, members of the Department have written or edited over 60 books, and produced over 150 articles and chapters in edited collections. Thematic strengths include maritime, military, social and economic history, as well as cultural, intellectual and political history, and the history of slavery and of adaptive technologies. The Department received the top grade of 5 in the 1996 and 2001 Research Assessment Exercises. The 2008 RAE rated 65% of research output as world-leading, or internationally excellent, with the remainder judged of international or national quality. External research income totalled over £3.67 million 2001-8, and the Department has a strong tradition of supporting postgraduate and early career researchers, as well as engaging with the wider public interested in history.

The Atlas of the Transatlantic Slave Trade, co-written by Professor David Richardson, has won the James A. Rawley prize in Atlantic History, presented by the American Historical Association.
