Postgraduate Study

The Department of History at Hull is one of the largest and most diverse in the country, with 30 staff actively involved in historical research and publication and in the supervision of research students. We are a community of internationally-recognised researchers, working in a wide range of historical periods, from the Iron Age to the twenty-first century. We offer postgraduate supervision in many areas, from cultural, intellectual and religious history to the history of warfare, business history, gender history and colonial history, as well as newly emerging areas such as Atlantic, global and environmental history.

The University has embarked on an ambitious phase of development, including a planned £15 million investment in the Brynmor Jones Library. History resources in the Library are especially strong: we continue to build our collection of monographs; subscribe to over 500 journals in History and its cognate fields; and have invested in digital resources such as the State Papers Online, Early American Imprints, collections of historic newspapers, and an expanding collection of ebooks through platforms such as Oxford Scholarship Online. The Faculty of Arts and Sciences is home to a number of research units and centres, each acting as a hub for interdisciplinary collaboration. In short, we provide an intellecually and socially stimulating atmosphere, close support and supervision, and world-class postgraduate teaching.

The menu on the left will give you a sense of the range of options we offer. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any queries on our programmes and for assistance with how to apply.
