Welcome to Film Studies at Hull
Dealing with art and entertainment, culture and commerce,
analysis of film and cinema leads to a deeper understanding of our
media-literate society than simply 'watching movies'. The massive
cultural importance of film itself warrants serious study.
From the global influence of Hollywood to the energy and
diversity of national cinemas, our perspective on many aspects of
life now depends on our ability to master visual languages. Since
its establishment at university level in the 1970s, Film Studies
has been noteworthy not only for its exceptional success in
recruiting undergraduates but also for the excellence of its
research, the rigour of its academic practices and the intellectual
calibre of its students.
This is an exciting time for Film Studies at the University of
Hull. In 2007 we launched a Single Honours degree in Film (in
addition to our twelve well-established Joint Degrees). The
University is also investing in new screening rooms and staffing
and a recently refurbished video studio and editing facility.
Although our focus is very much on the academic study of film, a
small number of our modules encourage some practical work, from
shooting and editing videos to recording podcast commentaries.
Film Studies at the University of Hull has been described as
'an exciting and rigorous programme' by external
examiners, who have commented favourably on our methods of teaching
and assessment. For example, in 2005 we received comments on
'the high standards of teaching' which resulted in modules
which were 'more thoroughly and variously examined than in most
universities'.
