Welcome to Film Studies at Hull

Film Studies has been taught at the University
of Hull since the 1970s. In our well-resourced department,
you will have the opportunity to study film from a variety of
perspectives: critical, historical, theoretical and
practical. You can choose to follow a single honours Film
Studies degree programme, or combine Film Studies with another
discipline in one of our several joint
honours programmes.
The department has particular expertise in
American visual culture, including film, television and
animation. We also offer a broad range
of modules that explore various British, European and East
Asian film cultures.
You can complement your study of film with a
range of modules that focus on television. On each year of
the programme, one studio-based module is available, which allows
students to put their classroom learning into practice by planning,
shooting and editing a short film using our state of the art
on-campus facilities.
Our film and television screenings take place
in rooms equipped with digital screen projection and blackout
facilities to recreate the cinema experience. The
University’s two libraries hold an ever-expanding range of
resources, including books, DVDs, journals, and e-resources.
As a Film Studies graduate, you will possess
not only the advanced skills of analytical reasoning and verbal
expression that employers expect to find in all university
graduates, but also a high level of visual literacy, a vital asset
in our contemporary, media-saturated environment.
