Admissions - Humanities - University of Hull

ADMISSIONS

Philosophy appeals to people with a wide range of interests and aptitudes, with backgrounds in the sciences or the arts. To help you decide if Philosophy is the right choice of subject for you, we list some of the key features of studying the subject, some of the personal qualities we look for in our students and how you might demonstrate these in your application on the page Is Philosophy the Right Subject for Me?

Because of its wide appeal, unless indicated in the table below, we do not have any special requirements in terms of which qualifications we accept for entry. We are also happy to accept A level General Studies for entry to any of our undergraduate study programmes. The level of offer will vary from programme to programme and sometimes from individual to individual: hence, in the table below, we give examples of typical offers (not standard offers), in terms of A level grades. We would like to add an important caveat: we like to look at an application ‘in the round', taking into account factors other than simply the level of grades (such as special circumstances, the personal statement, the reference), and therefore may be prepared to vary offers in individual case.

We are happy to accept a variety of other qualifications for admissions purposes, including the European Baccalaureate, the International Baccalaureate, the Irish Leaving Certificate, the Scottish Certificate of Education and the appropriate university matriculation examinations for all European Union countries. Applications from those taking vocational qualifications such as the Advanced GNVQ or VCE A levels are considered on an individual basis.

Apart from applications to part-time programmes, all applications should be made through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS).

Scholarships

In terms of A level grades, for the year 2008/2009 the scholarship threshold for philosophy programmes is AAB, except for Joint Physics and Philosophy, where it is BBB. This means that if the University of Hull is your first-choice (CF) institution for philosophy and you achieve ≥ AAB / BBB at A level (not including General Studies), you will be automatically awarded a scholarship of £1500 (for the first two years; renewable for the third/forth year, depending on satisfactory performance on the degree programme). For further information about tuition fees, scholarships, bursaries and other financial issues, please go to the University's Money Matters webpage.
