Postgraduate Study
Religion at Hull offers a range of opportunities for
postgraduate study. For those interested purely in a research
degree, we provide supervision in all the major areas of the
subject to doctoral level. But we also offer a highly flexible,
modular, taught course. This attracts both Religion graduates
wishing to investigate certain topics in greater depth than they
did as undergraduates (perhaps with a view to research), and as
graduates of other disciplines who wish to study Religion
intensively.
Postgraduate Religion at Hull is supported by a well-stocked
library, which has particular strengths in Biblical studies, Indian
religions and church history. The library and archive collections
contain some notable resources, ranging from medieval
ecclesiastical records, through religious pamphlets from 16th- and
17th-century England on microfilm, to the papers of Conrad Noel,
the influential Christian Socialist of this century. For more
elusive items, the University benefits from its proximity to the
British Library's reserve depository at Boston Spa.
Opportunities exist in the department to learn Hebrew and
related Semitic languages, Greek, and Sanskrit, at beginners' or
more advanced level. The University's language Institute provides
for the self-study of modern European and other languages. The
facilities of the Computer Centre are also available to Religion
postgraduates.
The Department is closely involved with a number of activities
of particular interest to its graduate students. In particular, the
Hull and District Theological Society, as well as inviting speakers
from around the country, has provided our graduate students with
the opportunity of presenting papers before an informed but
friendly audience.
