Ben Yong joined the Law School in September 2014. Prior to joining Hull, Dr Yong worked as a research associate at the Constitution Unit, University College London, between 2010 and 2013. He worked on several projects, leading on Ministers Outside Parliament and The Roles of Government Lawyers; and co-led the projects on Coalition Government in the UK and Special Advisers. Dr Ben Yong has contributed to BBC's Viewpoints and to select committee inquiries.

Dr Yong was a teaching fellow in public law in UCL's Faculty of Law in 2012-13; and a lecturer in public law at Queen Mary University of London 2013-14. Dr Yong was at the Ministry of Justice working on the UK Cabinet Manual between February and July 2010.

He has a LLB (Hons) and LLM from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand; and a PhD in law from LSE.

Dr Yong’s interests lie in executive government, the civil service, and non-judicial constitutional actors. He has written a book with Professor Robert Hazell (UCL) entitled Special Advisers: Who they are, what they do, and why they are needed (Hart, 2014).

  • Awarded Leverhulme Trust research grant for "Legal advice to legislatures: supporting a professionalised legislature" (18 month project, £68500; Dr Ben Yong as Primary investigator; Professor Cristina Leston-Bandeira (Leeds) as co-investigator).
  • Robert Hazell and Ben Yong ‘Special advisers: aiding responsive government, not unaccountable government’: one year research grant awarded by the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust (2012-13)
