From week 2 onwards also open on a Saturday from 11:00am 'till 3:00 pm.

 

Located on the first floor of the Ferens Building, the Language Learning Centre allows you to:

  • Use a variety of language learning materials
  • Work independently on your language learning in a comfortable and well-resourced environment
  • Receive personal and individualised language learning advice by using the helpline for language learners - The Language Learning Advisory Service
  • Widen your knowledge of language learning strategies and activities
  • Find the materials you needs, either by browsing the shelves or using the online catalogue
  • Practise your listening and speaking skills in a private area
  • Work in a small group in dedicated rooms, bookable in advance
  • Meet your tandem or learning partner, if you have one, for shared activities (e.g. watching a film or TV programme)
  • Use a range of equipment to enhance your language learning experience
  • Practise your pronunciation in the Pronunciation Room

Week 1

Equipment and resources

 The equipment available for use in the Language Learning Centre includes:

 

  • Tape recorders with playback and recording facilities to allow for the checking of pronunciation
  • Computers with access to the Internet and specialised language learning programs
  • 2 email checking points
  • Satellite TVs, currently with access to 16 different channels
  • DVD players
  • A wireless quiet study zone
  • A speaking area
  • A photocopier and printing facilities are available

 

The range of resources includes: 

  • Language learning materials (e.g. course books, workbooks, examination papers)
  • Magazines
  • Reference materials (e.g. dictionaries, grammars)
  • Audio-cassettes
  • Video-cassettes (e.g. films, recordings of TV programmes)
  • DVDs
  • CD-ROMs and on-line resources, including foreign language newspapers.

The Centre also stocks resources for language teachers, as a result of the Links into Languages project. 

 

All materials must be used in the centre. There are no borrowing facilities.
