Language learning advisers

What do they do?

The Language Learning Advisory Service aims to support all students or members of staff who want to:

  • find out about the Language Learning Centre (access to resources, effective use of the resources etc.)
  • start a self-study programme in any of the languages for which there are resources
  • know which resources are most appropriate
  • discuss language learning needs
  • monitor learning progress
  • know how to use particular resources or equipment
  • gain some general or specific advice on language learning strategies

This means that whether you are studying languages for your degree, taking a Passport Module or simply interested in learning or improving a language, this service, which is free-of-charge, is available to you.

When are the Advisers available?

There is a team of 6 Language Learning Advisers who provide individual, confidential appointments, from Monday to Friday. For the availability of the advisers in Semester 1, 2011, click here. The service is available during the vacations but with reduced hours.

In addition, you can contact the service for advising by email:

langadvising@hull.ac.uk

Where is the Advisers’ Office?

The Language Learning Advisers’ Office is in the Language Learning Centre, 1st floor Ferens Building. Go past Reception, turn left and the office is immediately ahead.

What is an appointment with an Adviser like?

There is a preliminary talk so the Adviser can find out more about you and your learning needs. As a result, you may be shown around the Centre to see what resources and facilities there are which would help you. You may already have some very specific questions regarding your language learning. For example, you may want to know how to improve your time-management, speaking, or listening skills and the Adviser would give you suggestions. The Adviser may assist you to create a personal language learning programme to be followed independently. If you wish, you can then be monitored by regularly coming to see an Adviser. However, no teaching on the part of any Adviser is involved. The aim of the service is to provide friendly, professional support for language learning, not to teach!

How can you make an appointment?

If you need advice regarding the learning of a particular language, (EFL, French, German, Italian etc.) you can choose an appointment with specific Adviser. All the team of Advisers, though, can provide general advice on language learning.

To make an appointment, come to the Language Advisers’ Office in the Language Learning Centre, 1st floor Ferens Building. (Go past Reception and turn left.)

There is an appointment diary near the window on the left. Look at the Advisers’ timetable nearby, check your own timetable and then book a time that suits you (minimum 15 minutes - maximum 30 minutes).

Please note that the very first meeting will probably last 30 minutes.

Before the first meeting, please try to complete a green Needs Analysis form and bring it with you to the first meeting. You can find copies of the form next to the diary.

This way, you are able to provide preliminary information about

  • the language(s) you want to learn / improve
  • your needs
  • the time available etc.

If you need help in booking, just ask at Reception!

Do the Advisers offer any other language learning support?

Yes!

The Advisers also arrange Tandem Learning partnerships, Drop-in Speaking Sessions for an opportunity to talk with native speakers of a range of languages, tours of the Language Learning Centre and Workshops on a variety of language learning themes, from Pronunciation for Musicians or Understanding and Writing Chinese Characters  to Getting to Grips with Grammar. Click here for more information.

One Adviser, Judy Jowers (j.m.jowers@hull.ac.uk) is also the Department of Modern Languages’ Disability Tutor. She is very happy to discuss any disability related language learning issues in confidence and to liaise with Disability Services if required.
