Music Scholarships and Bursaries

The School of Drama, Music and Screen offers a range of scholarships and bursaries to support home/EU undergraduate students in their studies. There are currently four scholarships available relating to particular instruments and voices. Full terms and conditions plus the application form can be found on the right-hand side of this page.

All scholars will be eligible for an instrumental bursary worth up to a maximum of £540 per year (depending on module choices) in addition to the scholarship amounts set out below. Furthermore, scholars will have the opportunity to participate in performances, masterclasses and workshops within the University and externally.

Harp Scholarship (1 award)

The Harp Scholarship is available to undergraduate music students with harp as the first-study instrument. It is valued at £1,000 per year and may be held in addition to a University of Hull Scholarship or Bursary.  Duties include giving recitals, playing at official and informal occasions, performing in the University Orchestra and other ensembles, and taking part in workshops for composers.

Organ Scholarship (1 award)

The Organ Scholarship is available to undergraduate music students with organ as the first-study instrument. It is valued at £2,000 per year and may be held in addition to a University of Hull Scholarship or Bursary. Duties include giving recitals, playing at official occasions, directing the University Chapel Choir and assisting the Director of Music at Beverley Minster. The organ scholarship is available from September 2019.

Robert Marchant String Scholarship (4 awards)

Robert Marchant String Scholarship awards are available to undergraduate music students who are first-study string players (currently limited to violin, viola, cello and double bass players). Each award is valued at £300 per year and may be held in addition to a University of Hull Scholarship or Bursary. Duties include playing at official and informal occasions, participating in the University Orchestra & other ensembles, performing in recitals and masterclasses, and taking part in workshops for composers.

Ouseley Choral Scholarship (1 award)

The Ouseley Choral Scholarship is available to undergraduate music students who are first-study singers (currently limited to tenors and basses). The scholarship is valued at £150 per year and may be held in addition to a University of Hull Scholarship or Bursary. The scholar will be expected to take a leading part in choral singing in the University and in the Chapel Choir, and will be eligible for solo roles in choral and operatic performances. Duties include singing at official and informal occasions, participating in the University Choir, Chapel Choir & other vocal ensembles, and performing in recitals.
