Politics and International Studies

Independent surveys show that the Department of Politics and
International Studies is one of the finest in the UK. Its student
centred approach, range of courses, staff expertise and employer
networks combine to make it a student destination which is second
to none. The department’s reputation for providing the highest
quality teaching in an excellent learning environment is reflected
in the 2009 National Student Survey in which the department was
ranked 5th in the UK for teaching. In 2010, the Times Good
University Guide ranked the department 11th out of 69, and 2nd
best in England outside of the Russell Group of Universities. As
regards student employment prospects, the same guide placed the
department in the top 10 universities in the UK.
Research is of an equally high standard; in the 2008
Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) three quarters of the
submissions by members of staff were internationally recognised,
with over one-third rated as internationally excellent or world
leading. Our students also benefit from studying in a department in
which the highest quality education is affordable, with the 2009
Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey ranking
Hull 2nd for student cost of living.
The Department's main areas of expertise are in the fields of
international relations, security studies, legislative studies, the
politics of the European Union, political economy, globalisation
and global governance, and political theory. The breadth of
expertise enables the Department to offer a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees as well
as a renowned research programme.
