Research

CEUS researchers have published widely on EU-related issues and have attracted many grants from prestigious funding bodies. Recent grant funded research projects carried out by CEUS researchers have covered issues such as the EU Presidency, the Europeanisation of member states, new modes of environmental governance in Europe, relations between the European Parliament and national parliaments and the EU's external relations. External funding has been attracted from, for example, the ESRC, the Nuffield Foundation, the Anglo-German Foundation, the British Academy and the Canadian High Commission.

CEUS researchers are currently particularly active on the following EU-related issues:

  • Institutional aspects of the EU (including the EP, Commission, Council and European Council as well as the office of the Presidency)
  • Constitutional aspects of the EU (including Treaty amendments and the EU constitution)
  • EU-member state relations with a particular emphasis on Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Portugal, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and the UK
  • EU decision-making and policy-making
  • EU Policies: environmental policy, Single European Market (SEM), Economic and Monetary Union (EMU), Information Technology (IT) and the information society, foreign and defence policy
  • Policy instruments: ‘new' policy instruments (such as emission trading) and traditional regulation. New modes of governance (including networked governance)
  • The impact of the new media on parliamentary democracy in Europe
  • EU external relations with America, China and Russia

Examples of ongoing and recently completed research projects by CEUS researchers include:

  • Anglo-German Foundation funded project on ‘The Politics of Emission Trading in Britain and Germany'. Principal investigator: Dr Rüdiger Wurzel. Duration: January 2005-October 2006.
  • Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funded project on ‘Innovation in Environmental Governance: A Comparative Analysis of New Environmental Policy Instruments (NEPIs)'. This project focused on NEPIs in Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, United Kingdom and the EU. Principal investigator: Dr Rüdiger Wurzel. The co-researchers were Dr Andrew Jordan (University of East Anglia) and Dr Anthony Zito (University of Newcastle). Lars Brückner (University of Hull) worked as research assistant on this project. Duration: May 2000 to March 2003. The project was graded ‘outstanding'.
  • Anglo-German Foundation funded projects on the EU Presidencies. Principal investigator: Dr Rüdiger Wurzel. The final report was completed in 2004 and can be obtained from the Anglo-German Foundation's website.
