The Department has just embarked on an ambitious strategy of research renewal and concentration based on its success in the recent Research Assessment Exercise.   The Department's research output was recognised as contributing to the cutting edge of contemporary scholarship in politics and international studies with much research designated as ‘internationally excellent'.  This recognised research excellence will continue to be emphasized in areas of existing strength organised around the six research centres which underpin the research activities of the department.  Key research themes include:

  • The comparative study of legislatures;
  • British politics, ideology, party politics and public policy;
  • Political theory, political philosophy with expertise on British idealism;
  • Globalisation and global governance, international political economy and international organisation;
  • A particular focus on regional government especially on the European Union through the CEUS and on Latin America;
  • Work on terrorism, security, and the armed forces with a special emphasis on military intervention and military ethics;
  • War studies including the international history of security, the Cold War and contemporary nuclear proliferation;
  • Environmental politics, policy and ethics and bioethics;

Lifetime Achievement in Political Studies

At its November 2003 ceremony, the Political Studies Association acknowledged the contribution that the Hull Politics Department has made to the discipline by giving all four 'Lifetime in Political Studies' awards to people who were connected with the Department. Professor Lord Plant did his doctorate in Hull; Professor Lord Smith lectured in it in the 1960s; Professor Lord Bhikhu Parekh taught in it for most of his career; and Professor Jack Hayward has taught from 1973-92 and since 1999 in the Department.
