Study for a University of Hull degree in Hong Kong

HK Student Wong

"Studying Criminology and Sociology with Hull has been my unforgettable experience for life. As one of the best institutions in the UK, studying criminology and sociology, I have been swamped in the sea of knowledge. My life has been completely transformed: I become a better person, in senses that I am more mature, and more importantly, more humble, and more ready to serve our community."

Joe Wong, Graduate of 2015 and Prize Winner for the best Hong Kong dissertation in June 2015.

The School of Social Sciences at the University of Hull offers several of its popular degrees in Hong Kong. Degrees in criminology have been offered at HKU SPACE Centre for International Degree Programme since 2009, with degrees in sociology launched in 2013. These high quality degrees are very popular amongst Hong Kong students who wish to complete a UK degree programme, and rely on the established reputation of the University of Hull in these areas of study.

The degrees offered are top-up degrees, with students entering the degree at Year 2, completing diploma and degree levels with us over a 2 year period.

The curriculum for each of our programmes is set out in the HKU SPACE prospectus. You can also find details online:

  • BA (Hons) Criminology
  • BA (Hons) Criminology with Psychology
  • BA (Hons) Criminology and Sociology
  • BA (Hons) Sociology

Entry Criteria

Students are granted admission if they hold (or expect to hold by September) a relevant Associate Degree or equivalent qualification from a recognised institution of higher education. Students should have minimum C grades in a relevant social research module (qualitative or quantitative), a social sciences module, and a module in academic English. Students must be resident full-time in Hong Kong in order to register.

Assuring Quality

All of our degrees meet the criteria set by the HKSAR School of Education & Social Sciences, in providing the same high quality education to Hong Kong students that we provide to students at the Hull campus, with the same curriculum and access to equivalent learning resources and student support.

Class representatives are elected each year to liaise regularly with programme staff at HKU SPACE and the University of Hong Kong, and they sit on the Joint Board of Studies which meets twice a year to oversee the degree programmes. Module evaluations are conducted at the end of every module to ensure that quality stays consistently high, and the results of these are shared with student representatives. The programmes are monitored annually by the University of Hull and HKU SPACE through our regular quality mechanisms. Programme Directors at HKU SPACE are responsible for overseeing the welfare of all students and addressing any issues which may affect participation and performance in the programmes.

Learning resources

Students have access to the Hong Kong University library as well as all eBooks and electronic journal resources at the University of Hull. Class materials are provided on eBridge, our virtual learning environment, to support class participation and independent study. Dissertation supervision is provided by lecturers at the University of Hull, and supported by regular dissertation workshops.

Our Graduates

Our graduates have gone on to jobs in criminal justice agencies, charities, business, and several have pursued postgraduate study at highly ranked institutions including LSE, the University of Durham and Hong Kong University.
