We are a multidisciplinary Department of Social Sciences
with a distinctive profile of teaching and research that brings
together a world class staff with expertise in Anthropology,
Criminology, Gender Studies, Social Policy & Social
Justice, Sociology, and Social Work.
Research
The research interests of staff cover wide areas, exploring
themes from the local to the global. The multi-disciplinary nature
of much of our work encourages diversity and values different
approaches to research. Here, you will find a distinctive and
lively research culture characterised by intellectual curiosity and
professionalism.
The Department of Social Sciences attracts a healthy stream of
externally supported research funded by the Economic and Social
Research Council, the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the
British Academy, international organizations, central and local
government and by voluntary and charitable agencies.
Teaching
Our teaching is informed by the latest research and this is
reflected in our National Student Survey success, in which past
students commented on the interesting curricula and enthusiastic
