BA (Hons) Social and Community Studies

This interdisciplinary social science degree addresses contemporary issues relating to communities, identities and social institutions. We explore the causes and consequences of social inclusion and exclusion, poverty and deprivation and the links between these and other social issues such as identity, gender, education, health, politics, and crime. With a particular focus on regeneration and development we explore how different parts of society (including government, media, communities and individuals) impact on each other on local, national and global levels.

Students develop an understanding of the relationship between theory and practice in social scientific knowledge. The course also provides the opportunity to gain a range of transferable skills.

This programme is designed to meet the needs of people interested in the community, voluntary and public sectors and suits the needs of people both professionally involved and with a personal interest.
