Assessment
Modes of assessment range from innovative systems such as case
studies, presentations and multi-choice questionnaires through to
traditional essays. Each method is that which most effectively
tests the knowledge and skills taught. Because different people are
more successful under some modes of assessment than others, we seek
to achieve a balanced assessment programme. Within the assessment
processes we will identify opportunities to enhance your ICT
skills.
Admission
You must have a first or second class Honours degree (in any
subject) or, exceptionally, a relevant professional qualification
(for example, the Diploma in Social Work from Hong Kong). All
entrants must also have achieved GCSE grade A-C in
English and Mathematics or equivalent (for example,
Key Skills Level 2 in literacy and numeracy). You also
need to have had some experience or working in a
helping/caring capacity.
Applications are normally made a year in advance (from 1
September) online through UCAS (www.ucas.com). The normal UCAS
closing date for applications is 15 January, but we may
consider applications after this date. Any application received
later than 30 June will be dealt with through the Clearing process.
Applicants are reminded that they will have to declare any criminal
convictions (including those ‘spent’) and that this will be
checked. International students will have to provide such
information from an official body. You will also have to make a
health declaration. we are required by our regulatory body, the
GSCC, to assess an applicant’s suitability and fitness to undertake
social work at the admissions stage.
We offer interviews to applicants whose qualifications,
experience, references and quality of application persuade us of
their excellence. Individual interviews, designed not to
discriminate unfairly against any applicant, are held. Our service
user and carer group are involved in the interview and selection
process.
We welcome applications from international students and members
of ethnic and other groups currently under-represented in higher
education and social work. Applicants with disabilities are also
welcome. If you wish to discuss any particular needs please contact
our departmental Disability Tutor, Dave Marsland d.marsland@hull.ac.uk.
Please note: the BA and MA Social Work Programmes will
no longer operate a deferred entry system.
Funding
Most UK students receive financial support in the form of a
bursary administered by the NHS Business Services
Authority. Bursaries cover all course fees and expenses, but
self-financing students must meet all such costs themselves. The
university does not, unfortunately, have bursaries which are likely
to be available for this course.
