Foundation Level Training in Family Therapy and Systemic
Practice
Overview
This Association of Family Therapy accredited course introduces
students to the field of systemic theory, practice and research. It
is the first year (of four in total) of training as a systemic
family therapist.
The course comprises of two modules that are normally run from
September to January (Module 92388 Introduction to Family Therapy)
and February to May (Module 92018, Family Interventions and
Systemic Practice).

Aims and objectives
To introduce you to the field of systemic
theory, practice and research.
To introduce you to basic practice skills,
including self-reflexivity, which can be applied to your practice
setting.
To provide a basis from which you may proceed
toward the intermediate level of training.
Objectives:
Critical appraisal of the concepts of systemic
practice
Critical appraisal of professional ethics and
values in systemic psychotherapy
Critically evaluate research into systemic
practice
Critical analysis of systemic models of change in
individuals, couples and families

Entry requirements
This is a degree level course, and you must be
able to demonstrate that you can work at this level. In addition,
you should have a relevant professional training (or equivalent)
and the opportunity to apply systemic ideas to a current work
setting.

Assessment information
Assessment for Module 92388
Assessment comprises of a 4,000 word
reflective essay that will compare and contrast the use of two of
the identified systemic theories discussed during the semester.
Assessment for Module
92018
Assessment comprises of a 4,000 work
reflective essay that will critically analyse the student’s role in
the development or delivery of systemic interventions for people
with complex needs.

develop knowledge and basic skills in systemic practice in a wide
variety of settings, from family therapy to working with
individuals with severe mental health problems.
This AFT accredited training is an essential
first step for practitioners who wish to go on to complete further
or professional training in family therapy and systemic
practice.

Funding information
For students employed
by an Acute Hospital Trust or Primary Care Trust within the
Yorkshire and Humber Strategic Health Authority, there is no direct
charge.
All students outside
the Strategic Health Authority catchment area should seek funding
from their employer or self fund.
