Faculty of Health and Social Care

Department of Midwifery and Child Health

Midwifery

A pioneer of midwifery studies, we have created a new department that brings together two well-established and closely aligned fields of study to improve academic support, enhance our international reputation and achieve a healthier future for all.

Here our expert team of midwifery and child health nursing professionals use their wide-ranging professional and academic expertise to build upon solid foundations and take innovation, enterprise and teaching to a new level of excellence.

Within the Department we foster a culture of collaboration and interdisciplinary scholarly activity. We also greatly value the integration of high-quality research, education, enterprise and professional practice to improve the health of women, babies, children and families.

The Department is also a focal point for offering a variety of learning experiences from pre-registration midwifery and child nursing programmes to CPD and professional programmes. This includes postgraduate study, including postgraduate research.

We are proud of our enthusiastic research community, which is led by our professoriate through three Faculty Research Development Groups (RDGs). The groups are:

The MARSH Group is led by a Professor of Midwifery and a Professor of Sexual & Reproductive Health; it links most closely with the Department of Midwifery and Child Health with some shared staff.

Departments are the base for the development of our academic themes which include maternal & sexual health, midwifery, neonates and child health. These enable linkages to be built between education and research across Departments and RDGs.

Beyond our campus we have excellent practice links with the NHS, social enterprises and voluntary sectors with a number of our colleagues maintaining their clinical expertise through part-time practice roles to develop the application of our academic work.

The Head of Department will play a key role in the development of this new initiative to develop an academic department of midwifery and child health, integrating educational development with research and professional practice.

All the foundations are in place to inspire a new era of innovation in midwifery and child health education and research.
