Faculty of Health and Social Care

Department of Nursing

Nursing

A pioneer of nursing studies, we have launched a specialist new department that will be the largest in the Faculty with over 600 undergraduate students studying on our Pre-Registration Nursing degree programme.

As a focal point for postgraduate study and PhD nursing students, we also offer a vibrant range of CPD and professional programmes at the undergraduate level for nurses in both acute and community settings.

With an impressive reputation and wide-ranging professional and academic expertise, our diverse team includes a number of adult health nursing professionals who specialise in such areas as the care of people living with long-term conditions and critical care. Together we foster a culture of collaboration and interdisciplinary scholarly activity.

We greatly value the integration of high-quality research, education, enterprise and professional practice to improve people’s health. We are proud of our enthusiastic research community which is led by our four professors of nursing. They play a key role in projects that range from areas such as dementia care and skin integrity to a longitudinal study into attitudes of student nurses.

Research activity and is focused within three of the Faculty’s Research Development Groups (RDGs), all of which collaborate directly with each department. The groups are:

Departments are the base for the development of our academic themes which include, long-term conditions and the older person, critical and unscheduled care, oncology and palliative care, and public health and community.

These enable linkages to be built between education and research across Departments and RDGs. Beyond our campus we have excellent practice links with the NHS, social enterprises and voluntary sectors with a number of our colleagues maintaining their clinical expertise through part-time clinical roles to develop the application of our academic work.

The solid foundations are in place to inspire a new era in nursing and take innovation, teaching, research and practice to a new level of excellence.
