Postgraduate research
The Faculty of Health and Social Care is a
vibrant environment that offers high quality research and education
opportunities to students from a range of professional backgrounds.
We are a friendly Faculty and our pursuit of achievement is
inspired by the University ethos of ‘going beyond', a determination
to exceed expectations and to encourage our students to strive for
excellence in whatever they do.
We are a rapidly expanding Faculty with over
115 academic staff including five professors with diverse research
interests and methodological expertise in both qualitative and
quantitative
research. There are three Research Development
Groups within the Faculty:
1. Wellbeing in Long-Term
Conditions
2. Maternal, Family and
Reproductive Health
3. Health Technology,
Innovation and Intervention
Each Research Development Group is led by a
member of the Professoriate and has cross Faculty links in addition
to successful partnerships with health and social care providers,
the charitable
sector and industry locally, nationally and
internationally.
We have a growing community of full and part
time research students who benefit from a strong team of committed
and experienced supervisors and a lively and supportive and
research setting.
The University provides a Post Graduate
Training Scheme with a comprehensive range of learning
opportunities which students are encouraged to tailor to meet their
individual needs. The Faculty has a Research Seminar Series and
encourages students to become involved in many all aspects of
activity.
Results from the 2011 Student Survey indicate
a high level of satisfaction amongst our research students.

PhD and MPhil
The PhD and MPhil are traditional research degrees requiring the
production of a thesis following a supervised research project. All
students undertaking traditional research degrees are required to
complete credits under the Postgraduate Research Training Scheme as
outlined in the
Postgraduate Research Training manual.
Students may be required to register for an MPhil in the first
instance. Those who wish to transfer their registration to a PhD
may do so after successfully undertaking a transfer process.
Typically this occurs after nine to twelve months of full-time
study, or 18 months of part-time study.

MRes
The MRes is designed for students who have no formal background
in research beyond that contained in their first degree, but who
wish to obtain a grounding in research methods and write a detailed
research proposal. The MRes can be regarded as a self-contained
programme leading to an award, or as the first stage of a PhD
programme.
Students are required to take 60 credits through taught modules,
and a further 120 credits through a dissertation of 25,000-30,000
words. Students proceeding to PhD will describe in outline how the
research will develop.
In addition, students will be required to present their work to
the faculty in the form of a 30 minute seminar, during which they
will be expected to answer questions related to their dissertation
topic.
