Biography

Yasmin Merali is Professor of Systems Thinking at the Hull University Business School and Director of the Centre for Systems Studies.  She was Co-director of the Doctoral Training Centre for Complexity Science at the University of Warwick and Associate Professor at Warwick Business School until 2013, serving as Director of the School’s Information Systems Research Unit until 2006. Her trans-disciplinary research agenda transcends traditional boundaries between the natural and human sciences by drawing on complex systems science to study socio-economic systems at all scales. She is an Expert Evaluator for the EU and was elected to the Executive Committee of the Council of the European Complex Systems Society in 2012.  She is an active participant in a number of international research networks and was recently elected to the Executive of the UNESCO UniTwin for Complex Systems Science.  She has extensive consultancy experience in public, private, and third sector organizations, and received a BT Fellowship and an IBM Faculty Award for her work on knowledge management and complexity.

Qualifications

BSc. Hons. Biochemistry with Physiology, London, MSc Medical Physics and Radiobiology, Birmingham, MSc Information Technology for Business, Coventry.

Teaching

Professor Merali’s extensive teaching experience on international MBA and Executive programs includes visiting positions at University of Cambridge, Universidade Catolica Portuguesa, Ecole de Management Lyon, LETI St Petersburg and the Budapest University of Economic Sciences. She holds the Warwick Business School Outstanding MBA Teacher Award.

Research

Professor Merali's research is trans-disciplinary, using complexity theory to address issues of transformation in internet-enabled socio-economic contexts, focusing on network dynamics and the emergence and co-evolution of socio-economic structures. Her research is funded by UK and European funding councils, government departments and private sector organisations.  She serves on editorial boards for refereed journals and is co-editor of the Journal of Information Technology Special Issue on Complexity and Information Systems and the forthcoming Special Issue on social media and social networks. She has over 150 publications with her most recent articles appearing in MIS Quarterly, Organization Studies, Journal of Information Technology, Journal of Strategic Information Systems and the International Journal of Operations and Production Management. Her research agenda supports the work of several post-graduate students: past students have completed Doctorates on transformation of socio-economic systems in the UK, Canada, Korea and Kenya, and more recent supervisions are concerned with the networked economy, policy formulation, digital media and the transformation of information, ideas and opinions in social networks.
