National business game held at Business School

The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) is challenging schools to enter its national business game and the Humberside heat of the Business, Accounting and Skills Education (BASE) competition will take place on Tuesday 9 February at Hull University Business School.

Six local schools have already signed up for the competition which will so far see John Leggott College, Withernsea High School, Wilberforce College, Hymers, the Read School and Hull Collegiate go head to head in a fiscal battle royal.

Aimed at 16-18 year olds, BASE links schools, students and employers together in a bid to not only increase awareness of a career in accountancy and finance, but to develop desirable skills in the future workforce.

Assuming the role of chartered accountants, the students will have just two hours to analyse, discuss and decided on the next business steps of fictional organisations before presenting their ideas to a panel of business professionals.

An exhibition zone will also give teams the chance to research the career and talk to trainee or qualified ACAs. With support from the hosts, Hull University Business School, and other local firms, the event aims to be a real success.

Graeme Reid, lecturer in Accounting and Finance at the school and President, Humberside & District Society of Chartered Accountants, said:

'Students will be truly engaged, challenged and empowered during the course of the day. This competition requires participants to work as a team to find solutions to real business issues. Not only will the students gain a valuable insight into what it means to be a chartered accountant, but they will also take away transferable skills required in their future careers.'

More than twenty regional heats are taking place across the UK throughout February and March. The winners of each heat will go on to the national final which takes place in Birmingham on 1st July 2010.
