Exploring, Supporting and Promoting
Learning for All
The Institute for Learning is a research-based
centre for learning and teaching. It has a national and
international reputation for excellence and a particular
commitment to serving the educational needs of the local
region.

The Institute for Learning consists of:
The Centre for Educational Studies
(CES)
CES is committed to understanding and developing learning
communities. It is involved in teaching and research, centred
on schools, reaching out to everyone involved in learning. As
well as initial teacher training, the CES provides a wide range of
courses at all levels: some for new and experienced school
teachers, some involving training and research in the wider
community.
The
Centre for Lifelong Learning (CLL)
CLL has a University-wide role in promoting and co-ordinating
part-time continuing education, as well as a remit to widen
participation. It covers work-based learning and community learning
taught at around 120 venues within the region. Programmes
range from short, 10 week courses to longer study routes leading to
a degree. The Centre’s work contributes significantly to the
University’s Reach Out agenda.
A strong Research ethos underpins and
supports much of the activity undertaken by the Institute for
Learning.
The Institute for Learning Research Executive Board, chaired by
the Director of Research, Professor Derek Colquhoun is charged with
overseeing the development of research across the
Institute.
