The programme is for people who want a career
in Professional Counselling, whether in self employment or working
for an agency. The programme is also suitable for people who
want to develop and use counselling skills in their work.
This is a professional training programme in the integrative
approach. The core text is:
Clarkson, P. The Therapeutic
Relationship. Whurr Publishers, London. (2003)
This course includes a commitment to seeing
clients in an agency context and having personal
therapy/counselling.
Where is the programme held?
The programme runs at The Focus Centre,
Kingston Square, Hull.
When does the programme start?
Teaching starts at the beginning of October
2012.
When do I attend class and how long will it
take?
The Foundation Degree is a full-time
qualification for two years, which runs
over 32 weeks and will take account of school holidays where
possible. It will involve 1.5 days per week at the Focus
Centre. Other time will be needed to attend therapy,
supervision, placement and private study.
What modules are studied on the
programme?
The programme is composed of a series of
modules which have been designed to reflect the needs of employers,
practitioners and those who want to use counselling skills in other
contexts.
The programme will include the following
modules:
- The integrative approach as a core theoretical model
- Managing your own learning
- Establishing a professional framework
- Counselling skills development and practice
- Personal development and self awareness
- Diversity and the developing practitioner
- Supervised counselling practice
- Integrating professional issues into practice
- Integrating personal development into practice
How is the work assessed?
Each module will be assessed. This will take a range of forms to
suit each student’s differing learning styles. Assessments may
take the form of learning portfolios, essays, presentations, case
studies, reflections on personal learning journals, placement
portfolios, project reports and evaluations of counselling
practice.
What does it cost?
Tuition fees for 2012 entry are £7000 per annum.
There are additional costs not included in
your course fees. These are 40 hours of personal therapy and
appropriate supervision hours for 125 hours of client work.

Acceptance on to the programme will be dependent on a
selection process.
At interview the University will look for
evidence of:
- A minimum of 150 hours of certificated counselling or
counselling skills training within the last 3 years. The University
of Hull runs a number of appropriate courses for you to accumulate
hours. Accredited courses from other institutions will also be
considered.
- That you understand the kind of commitment you are undertaking
in embarking on professional training of this nature.
- That you can demonstrate appropriate qualities/values for
training in the integrative approach.
- Commitment, enthusiasm, motivation and the potential to succeed
on the programme and cope with study at HE level.
- Basic IT skills or a willingness to learn and develop them for
study purposes. A good standard of written English and the ability
to express yourself on paper.
- A willingness to obtain a suitable counselling placement to
develop and practice counselling skills.
- Self-awareness and a commitment to personal development.
- Any offer of a place will be made conditional on the results of
an Enhanced Criminal Bureau (CRB) check being confirmed as
acceptable by the University.
