Why should I study a University Foundation Award?
- It is a perfect starting point in higher education
- It provides an ideal basis for further study
- The UFA is a University Award at first year undergraduate level

How are the UFA courses
organised?
- Most courses carry 10 credits
- Credits are gained when you successfully complete the
coursework, having attended 70% of the course
- You need 60 credits in order to gain the UFA
- 50 credits must come from course modules
- 10 credits come from a final piece of work, usually a personal
study in a topic of your choice, supervised and supported by your
own tutor
You can spread your studies over a number of
years or gain the full UFA in one year by taking a planned study
route.

Please note that due to funding restrictions,
students who are unable to complete the assessment element of any
UFA module will not be eligable to register for another module
within the same academic year.
What entry qualifications do I
need?
You do not normally require any previous
qualifications, experience or knowledge, only an interest in the
subject.

course?
You will need to complete an application form and return it to us

In order to avoid disappointment it is advisable
to register as early as possible. If your course is fully booked
another course may run if there is the demand.
Once your registration form has been received we
will send you an acceptance letter by post, together with an
information sheet and a map of the campus if that is where you are
studying.
What will the courses cost?
The full fee for a 10-credit course is £95. This
helpful course fees explained
document shows whether you are entitled to a nil fee for your
course.
If you are in receipt of any of the benefits
listed below there is a nil fee for your course.
- Housing Benefit
- Income Support
- Council Tax Benefit (not the single person’s reduction)
- Income-related Job Seekers’ Allowance (JSA)
- Working Tax Credit/Disabled Person’s Tax Credit
- you are a student on the ‘New Deal’ Allowance
- you are a Tax Credit recipient with a low family income (the
income threshold is the same as that for free prescriptions, ie
gross household/family income of less than £16,845).
- Incapacity Benefit, Severe Disablement Allowance or
Disability Living Allowance, and your
sole income is from welfare
benefits
- you have a gross household/family income of £16,845 and
are not in receipt of tax credit or any qualifying benefits.
Please note that course fees also depend on
your residential status within the UK. Details of fees for other
students are available from the Centre.
If you are not covered by any of these
reductions or concessions, but experience real difficulty in
paying, then please either contact Nicky Robinson-Jordan, the CLL
Senior Finance Assistant, on 01482 466872 or write to her at the
Centre. All requests will be handled in the strictest
confidence.
If you lose your job during the course and
become entitled to an income-related benefit please contact the
Centre on 01482 466872.
The University Foundation Award Final Piece
of Work (10 Credits)
To gain the University Foundation Award you will
need to complete a final piece of work. This is normally a personal
project supervised and supported by your own tutor. To register or
to obtain further details please contact Claire Black at the
Centre on 01482 465666.
