Union Representation

The Centre for Lifelong Learning offers two programmes in Union Representation in conjunction with UNITE the Union:

  • University Certificate in Union Representation
  • Certificate of Higher Education in Union Representation in Context

These programmes are for those who have an understanding of workplace union participation and have completed 10-credit UFA courses.

University Certificate in Union Representation

Participants on this programme complete modules in:

  • Organisation, Recruitment and Representation of Union Members
  • Employment Legislation and Legal Representation

Certificate of Higher Education in Union Representation in Context

This programme is for those who have completed the University Certificate in Union Representation. Participants will complete further modules in:

  • Trade Unions and the Local Economy and Community
  • Trade Unions Today
  • European Issues from a Trade Union Perspective

Duration

The 60-credit certificate in Union Representation is taken over one full calendar year. A further 60 credits can be studied as part of the Certificate of Higher Education in Union Representation in Context.

Location

Both programmes are completed through a combination of two-day face-to-face workshop sessions and online learning using the university’s virtual learning environment. Workshops are usually held over a Friday and Saturday at the university’s Cottingham Road campus.

Assessment

There are no examinations in either programme. Achievement is measured by continuous assessment involving two or three pieces of work in each module. These include written assignments, presentations, class-based activities and reflective learning logs.

Entry requirements

Applicants will normally have successfully completed two courses as part of the UFA programme. Applicants will also be asked to attend an interview with course leaders.
