English Language
Improve your English
The University of Hull provides language courses specifically
designed to prepare students who do not have English as a first
language and who are planning to come to the UK for undergraduate
or postgraduate study.
There are courses available at both out Hull and Scarborough
campuses, all of which are designed for students who either need to
improve their English language skills in order to meet the level of
proficiency for their chosen course of study OR those who have
already met the English language conditions but who want to find
our more about English academic study and life in the UK.
Programme Content
The Summer Study Programme provides and intensive full time
English language course.
You will attend a programme of interesting lectures throughout
the summer and be taught by well qualified and experienced
teachers.
Courses include
- Communications skills: focusing mainly on
listening and speaking skills.
- British Studies: aimed at helping you to
increase your understanding of British life, culture and
institutions.
- English for Academic Purposes: focuses on the
English and essential study skills that you will need whilst
studying at an English speaking university.
- English for Business studies: develops the
English needed for Business Courses.
Learning and teaching styles in the UK Higher Education: focuses
on different kinds of educational delivery at University; from
practical workshops, through fieldwork to seminars and
lectures.
Entry requirements
If you need to achieve a 6.0 IELTS by the end of the summer
programme you must have achieved an IELTS score of 5.5 or
equivalent at the time of application.

English language - Scarborough Campus

If you are arriving outside the designated arrival days we may
be able to provide accommodation, at an additional cost.
If you are studying at the Hull Campus, your fees include
continental breakfast and evening meal each day, a bus pass,
a telephone card with £5 credit and the social
programme.
If you decide to cancel your accommodation booking you must
give us five working days notice in advance otherwise a
cancellation charge of £50 of the outstanding balance of your
account will be made (failure to let us know will result in
full payment of fees).
Course 3 Bursary
If you complete Course 3 of the Summer Study Programme and then
go on to register on a full-time degree programme (undergraduate or
postgraduate), paying your own fees with international fees status,
then you may be entitled to a bursary of £920 towards your degree
programme fees. This should be automatic, but you will
receive more information when you register.
Facilities and location
Accommodation at the Lawns (Hull)
The Lawns are halls of residence grouped around a catering and
social centre 40 acres of land in the outskirts of Cottingham
Village.
Accommodation at Cayley Hall (Scarborough)
Located on the main campus, Cayley Hall offers modern secure
accommodation. All the rooms are en-suite with bed linen
provided for summer study students. Full use can be made of
the students' union lounge and sports facilities.
You will also be able to take part in a social programme
with visits to places of interest, film evenings, quizzes, sports
activities and international evenings.

Airport, Humberside Airport, Hull ferry port or Hull train/bus
station on any of the arrival days, the International Office will
