Library Services

Services for part-time students

Part-time learners Library registration

You do not need to register separately with the Library. Your student card, which you will receive from Student Services or from your course tutor, is also your Library card and can be used in the Brynmor Jones Library (BJL) or the Keith Donaldson Library (KDL) on the Scarborough campus. Keep your card with you at all times as you may need to refer to the ID number on the card when contacting the Library by phone, email or via the Internet. You will also need your student card if you visit the Library in person.

Part-time learners photocopy request service

The Library provides a photocopy service for part-time learners.  We can supply photocopies of journal articles or extracts from books in stock at either the Brynmor Jones Library or the Keith Donaldson Library. Photocopies will be posted to your home address. Students on part-time certificate and degree courses are allowed four free requests each year. UK Copyright Laws restricts photocopying to no more than one chapter of a book or 5% of the whole book, whichever is greater, and not more than one article from a single issue of a journal for each user.

You must complete an Inter Library Loan request form for each item http://www2.hull.ac.uk/lli/library-services/books/interlibrary-loan.aspx

Postal loans for part-time learners

Part-time students based in the UK or Ireland may request up to 4 books per academic year to be posted to their home address. If your books have not been requested by another customer you may renew them yourself via the Library catalogue, by email or by phoning the Library, telephone number 01482 465440.

You will be responsible for paying the postal charges for returning the book to the Library. Fines will be charged for the late return of books and for loss or damage. We recommend that you use a secure and traceable method of returning books by post; such as recorded delivery. We regret that we are unable to post books to students outside the UK and Ireland.

Please submit your request by phone, email or via the postal loan request form

Loan periods

Most of the books in the Library are available for loan. Loan periods and loan allowances vary depending on location and demand. On weekends the Brynmor Jones Library is partially staffed and you can return and borrow books by using the self service machines.

Renewals

If no-one else has reserved the book, you may renew books on loan to you. There is no limit on the number of times you may renew an item. Items can be renewed up to 3 days prior to their due date.  24 hour loan books are not renewable although if when you check the item in it is not booked by another user you will be able to check it out again for up to 24 hours. For other loan periods you can renew books by:

  • Connecting to the Library Catalogue via the Internet and accessing your library record.
  • Email - libhelp@hull.ac.uk. Please include the name and student number and title and classmark numbers of the books you wish to renew.
  • Telephone - 01482 465440

Please remember that if a book has been reserved by another reader it will not be possible to extend your loan.

Returning books

Books may be returned to the Brynmor Jones Library or to the Keith Donaldson Library. You may use the return facility on the self service machines to return items. At the Keith Donaldson Library, you can return books in the book box outside the library if the library is closed.
