PLEASE NOTE: For medical
reasons, the Maths Adviser is unfortunately unavailable
We expect to be able to offer
maths appointments again in mid-May. All other appointment
types are unaffected.
Types of appointment
Study Skills or Information Technology
Skills Advisers can help with academic
skills such as academic writing, referencing, notetaking, time
management, reflective learning and revision/exam techniques.
They can also help with using IT to
effectively manage and present your work, such as using Word
effectively for written assignments or using bibliographic software
such as Refworks and EndNote to manage your references. We also
have some advisers who can help with Nvivo and SPSS but please make
sure you specify this when you book so that we can make sure you
see an appropriate adviser.
We are currently unable to offer maths
appointments while our Maths Adviser is on medical leave. SPSS
appointments are still taking place via 'Study Skills or
Information Search Skills
If you are struggling to find academic quality
resources in your subject area or need to improve your search
strategies, then book an Information Search Skills
appointment. Referencing help is also available in these
appointments including Refworks and EndNote advice.
Format of an appointment
Appointments are 30 minutes long and we can see you
individually, in pairs or small groups. Please arrive promptly and
bring along the work you need help with.
What to expect from an appointment
Advisers provide help for specific academic
study queries and will provide advice on how to become more
independent in your learning. Our advisers will therefore try to
help you with your query and give you advice on what you can do
next to improve your academic study skills.
What NOT to expect from an appointment
We cannot proofread your work for you but will provide tips and
guidance on how to proofread your own work. Proofreading and
editing is a skill you need to develop to become an independent
learner so repeated requests to review similar work will be
discouraged. We want to help you help yourself so please avoid
booking repeat appointments out of habit.
We do not provide language support so please
seek help from the Language
If you suffer from a specific learning
difficulty such as dyslexia, we can provide general study skills
advice but if we feel your needs are acute we may refer you to
Services who have specialist advisers.
If you cannot make an appointment for any reason, please log
into myadmin and cancel your appointment by deleting it. If
you do not cancel an unwanted appointment then you are denying
other students the opportunity to use that time.
