Fellowship for control systems expert
3 February 2010
A University of Hull academic has been honoured for his
work in fault diagnosis and control systems.
Professor Ron
Patton from the University’s Department of Engineering has been
awarded the title of Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and
Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He is the only control systems expert
in the UK to be given the title, and one of only 10 people in the
UK given the award across all Electrical and Electronic Engineering
fields for 2010. The IEEE grade of Fellow is conferred by the IEEE
Board of Directors upon those with an extraordinary record of
accomplishments.
Prof Patton’s work includes extensive control
system fault diagnosis research for the aerospace industries and
other industrial applications. He is widely published and cited in
his field, and is editor of several journals. His current work
involves the development of methods to improve the safety and
economy of future aircraft in a project involving Airbus and
several European partners.
Ron said: “I was really shocked to be awarded
this fellowship. It is a great honour to be recognised in this way
by the IEEE for my research in fault diagnosis and fault tolerant
control, a subject which has become increasingly important in
recent years.”
As well as his highly important research, Prof
Patton also relishes his role as a lecturer.
“I believe that if you are committed to
teaching, you may also produce good research, and vice-versa,” he
explained. “I love seeing my students develop and going on to excel
in their careers.”
Prof Patton is to be Honorary Chair for the
IEEE co-sponsored Conference SysTol’10 in Nice in October
this year.
Ends.
