The section of Respiratory Medicine was founded in 1997 with the appointment of Professor A H Morice as foundation Chair. Respiratory Medicine has a major interest in the diagnosis and treatment of cough. The Hull Cough Clinic has been established and now treats patients with a national tertiary referral pattern [International Society for the Study of Cough]. The investigation of cough and antitussive agents is a long established interest with a highly accurate cough challenge methodology and full range of clinical investigation required for the study of the cough reflex. Clinical trials in the area of cough and asthma are undertaken in our six bedded Clinical Trials Unit [link to Clinical Trials website]. The Unit has a high reputation for respiratory studies performed to good clinical practice studies and includes many specialist investigations such as induced sputum, airways nitric oxide and impedance oscillometry spectroscopy.
