This programme is aimed at all mental health
practitioners working in acute inpatient settings, in psychiatric
intensive care or within community-based teams such as crisis
resolution and home treatment teams. It has been developed to
reflect the needs of the workforce within the new career structures
under Agenda for Change and the Knowledge and Skills
Framework.
The programme:
- Incorporates the 10 essential shared capabilities for mental
health practitioners (DH 2004) and the Capable Practitioner (SCMH
2001)
- Addresses the findings of the CNO report From Values to Action
(2006) and the HCC themed review (2008), as well as the areas
covered within AIMS (RCP 2007)
- Addresses the findings of service-user-driven reports including
Ward
Watch (Mind 2004) and Behind Closed Doors (Rethink, Sane and
Zito Trust 2004)
Comprising six 20-credit modules, the programme will develop
your knowledge and understanding across the following areas:
- Contemporary research and theory underpinning practice in the
acute care setting
- Legal and ethical issues that have relevance to practice in the
acute care setting
- The historical and cultural context of acute care current
social, organisational and policy influences on acute care
Duration
Maximum three years part-time.
Location
The modules are delivered at the University of Hull’s main
campus on Cottingham Road.
Start
September each year.
Learning and teaching
The programme is designed to develop students’ ability to:
- Critically review and appraise contemporary research evidence
and theory that might inform practice
- Present an informed and critical discussion on issues relating
to acute care
- Apply identified approaches and interventions in their practice
areas
- Utilise leadership, team-working and reflective skills to
develop and change practice
Assessment
Each module is individually assessed by a 4,000-word essay (or
equivalent).
Cost
Funded places are available via the strategic health authority
(SHA) contract with the Faculty of Health and Social Care.
Facilities are available for self-funding.
Entry qualifications
This programme is open to all mental health practitioners
working in acute care or any health care professional with an HE
Diploma or 120 credits at Levels 4 and 5.
Registration and induction
Registration dates are advertised, and all successful applicants
will be told where, when and how to register prior to the
commencement of their programme. Postal registration is also
available – details will be provided on application.
Induction arrangements will be publicised, and all successful
applicants will be informed of dates, times and venues for
induction days.

Anyone wishing to obtain funding via the SHA should apply
through the NHS trust or PCT training departments in the first
instance.
