This Foundation degree programme is aimed at dental
nurses working within the NHS trusts or dental practices, and it
incorporates specialist modules in dental radiography and dental
sedation.The programme is designed to meet the developmental needs
of dental nurses as they move towards becoming a registered
professional group.
The programme comprises six modules at certificate level (Stage
1) and six modules at diploma level (Stage 2). Each module is worth
20 academic credits and comprises some academic learning as well as
learning in the workplace supported by a nominated Practice
Supporter. Some modules are compulsory (core) and others can be
selected from the given list.The first module introduces students
to the skills and resources required for study at university and
thus prepares them for the remainder of the programme.
For those who do not wish to undertake the entire programme,
some modules may be accessed as stand-alone.
Duration
Two years full-time or up to four years part-time.
Location
While the main base will be the University’s Hull Campus, on
Cottingham Road, the ethos of Foundation degrees is that they are
work based – so a significant part of your study takes place at
work, with support from University lecturers through the use of a
web-based virtual learning environment. Modules are supported by
study days, lectures, small-group work, online tutorials,
simulation, practice learning and self-directed learning.

Learning and teaching
The programme involves a combination of workplace learning and
University attendance, with some use of a virtual learning
environment, depending on the selection of modules and the modes of
teaching and delivery identified for each module.
Assessment
Each module will have its own assessment method. Methods vary
throughout the programme to enable all students to demonstrate a
range of learning styles.
Cost
Applicants who are employed by the NHS trusts / PCT will be
eligible for funding from the NHS Yorkshire and the Humber
Strategic Health Authority (SHA). Reduced fees are available for
self-funding students. Some students may be eligible for funding
through the local education authority grant scheme.
Entry qualifications
Applicants should be able to produce evidence of their ability
to study at higher education Level 4, in the form of previous
qualifications and/or a recommendation from their employer.A dental
nurse qualification, plus experience of working as a dental nurse,
is essential.
Registration and induction
Registration dates are advertised, and all successful applicants
will be told where, when and how to register prior to the
commencement of their programme. Postal registration is also
available – details will be provided on application.
Induction arrangements will be publicised, and all successful
applicants will be informed of dates, times and venues for
induction days.
