Registration

All students must formally register before the beginning of their course (and annually thereafter if their programme runs into a subsequent year). This registration involves an exchange: paying your fees and giving the University personal information for your record, receiving both advice on your studies and the student card that gives you access to all the University’s facilities from the the Computer Centre to the Sports and Fitness Centre, from the library to the students’ union.

For all courses except the University Foundation Award there are specific parttime registration events just before the start of the new academic year in September. These events continue into the early evening for the convenience of those students in full-time employment. Parttime taught postgraduate students register at specific PG registration events, and parttime research students can start their studies at any time through the year after registering either at the same PG events or, at their convenience, in the Graduate School.

A small number of courses may arrange their own registration events, or organise postal registration. For students who, for personal reasons, cannot register at the required time, alternative arrangements can be made if we are given sufficient advance notice.

"When I signed up to study for the Certificate in Maritime History I did so purely out of interest, with no intention of progressing further. The support from the tutors was first class: help and advice were there whenever needed.

I found myself with a great bunch of fellow students, and the course was hugely enjoyable - so much so that I changed my mind, continued to study and am now well on the way towards a degree in History."
