decapods in the area of Eliat since the 1960's

Andrew Richardson qualifies as a PADI dive instructor
Andy, a postgraduate in the centre, has been one of the
stalwarts of the CEMS dive training organsiation for several
years. We congratulate him on his achievement.
Phil Wheeler appointed acting Head of Department
Phil Wheeler has taken over from Linda Hockley
as head of CEMS. On taking up the role he said "These are
interesting and challenging times for higher education; as a small,
dynamic and developing department we’re in an interesting place,
and I’m very pleased to get the chance to lead CEMS at this
time"
CEMS trio head South for Christmas
Magnus Johnson, Neil Thompson and Natalie Ensor will be spending
Christmas on board the British Antarctic Survey ship James Clarke
Ross. Magnus, Neil (an MSc student in the Centre) and Natalie
(a recent graduate, now working at BAS) will be working on the
physiology and ecology of the antarctic krill, Euphausia
superba.
Phil becomes a University Teaching Fellow
Phill Wheeler has been awarded a University Teaching
Fellowship.
Magnus and Ralf awarded innovations funding to develop a
module in Acoustic Ecology
The small size of Scarborough Campus means that there are
opportunities for interdisciplinary teaching and research.
Working with Rob Mackay and Jo Anderson from the School of Arts and
New Media they will be developing a module where both arts and
science students develop expertise in recording sounds from the
environment but apply what they learn in very different ways.
Scientific Diving Established at CEMS
Magnus Johnson, Ralf Bublitz and Andrew Richardson have
successfully completed the requirements for certification as
European Scientific Divers.
Phil appointed to National Park Authority
Phil Wheeler has been appointed as a member on the North York
Moors National Park Authority. His membership will strengthen
ties between the University and the National Parks and hopefully
provide more opportunities for students to get involved
conservation and research of this beautiful region.
Magnus awarded Senior Summer Scholarship at St John's College,
Oxford University
Magnus Johnson has been awarded a summer scholarship to St
John's College at Oxford University. He will be working with
Sammy DeGrave on the visual function and adaptation of pontoniine
decapods using the extensive collection available in the Oxford
University Natural History museum.
New Staff Join CEMS
Cath Waller (ex British Antarctic Survey and Brighton
University) has joined CEMS as a lecturer in Ecology. Caths
interests in ecophysiology strengthen the department's expertise in
this area.
Will Mayes (ex Newcastle University) has joined CEMS as a
lecturer in Environmental Science. Will has particular
interests in pollution resulting from the abandonment of industrial
sites.
CEMS joins the Sub Aqua Association
In order to give its students more opportunities to dive and to
encourage self-reliance as divers, CEMS Dive Club has been
established (Sub Aqua Association Club Number
1118). Ralf will be working with students to ensure the
success of the club. Although students still have the
opportuity to train to PADI standards if they wish we feel that the
ethos and training standards offered by the SAA umbrella are
more in line with the CEMS academic setting and the desires of our
students.
Sue scoops essay prize.
Sue Willis (Coastal Marine Biology Graduate, SCCS 2006) has won
a £250 prize for an essay recounting her experiences at the
Scarborough Centre for Coastal Studies. Sue came to us as a mature
student and grabbed hold of the opportunities offered and has
graduated with an excellent degree. She has now gone on to study
for a PhD entitled "The Classification and Management of Limestone
Pavements". We wish her every success.
