The Region
Dinosaurs, explorers and vampires
With its towering cliffs, rocky shores and sandy beaches, North
Yorkshire offers some of the UK's more spectacular and inspiring
coastline. The remarkable concentration of dinosaur footprints and
fossils found locally has caused the area to become known at the
Dinosaur Coast.
To the north of Scarborough is historic Whitby- home to some
exceptional fish restaurants and famed for its Benedictine abbey,
as a setting for Bram Stoker's Dracula and as the home of Captain
Cook, and his ship Endeavour. To the south there's Filey, a
friendly seaside town with some elegant Edwardian and Victorian
architecture, tranquil gardens and five miles of sandy
beach.
Coastline and countryside
Elsewhere along the coast, narrow ravines shelter winsome
fishing villages such as Robin Hood's Bay, Runswick Bay and
Staithes; inland lies the breathtaking heather-clad expanse of the
North Yorkshire Moors National Park; while the hills of the
Yorkshire Wolds ripple gently southward. This variety of attractive
landscapes on our doorstep offers Scarborough students unrivalled
opportunities for fresh air and healthy recreation.
North Yorkshire: star of the screen
North Yorkshire's natural beauty frequently attracts film and
television crews from around the world. Although you might not
realise it, you're probably already familiar with the region from
its many screen appearances such as in the Harry Potter films,
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Stardust, Heartbeat,
Sugartown and Lost in Austen, - so maybe it's time to come and
experience it for yourself.
